Enormous plate of love - Edit
Vola is set back in an empty lot, with tunes and fairy lights inviting you in. The tables are under a roof and the whole place has a lovely relaxed backyard BBQ kind of vibe.
Read moreWe both ordered the vegan box, as it looked like it had a good range of stuff to try. The jollof rice and coconut rice and beans were both cooked perfectly and carried plenty of flavour. The tomato stew was intense but not overpowering, just delicious. I would have liked slightly more of it to balance the more dry components, but I was still happy with what I got. The salad was better than I expected, I thought it was one of those "chuck it on the plate so there's some green" kind of things, but the dressing and fresh leaves and carrot added to the overall dish. Two big fat cassava chips were crispy and chewy and dense, the akra were fried nugs of carby goodness, and the thing that we both loved the most was the fried plantains. Eating these made me wonder wtf I'm doing with my life that has stopped me eating fried plantains every day? They were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of caramelised bits on the edges. This was an extremely filling dish and very carb-heavy, I made it through the whole thing, but probably should have stopped and taken the rest home. What even is self control in the face of newly discovered comfort food though? If you're not keen on carbs this is probably not the place for you (I am always keen on carbs)
There's a dedicated vegan section on the menu, but there's other vegan items on the next page too (including fufu and tomato stew, which I'll be coming back for soon!) so make sure you check that out. Was open on a public holiday (Friday before Grand Final).

sunshine on a plate - Edit
As I walked down Ovens St on a warm, almost Spring day, I wondered if Vola Foods was open, until I got closer and heard the dancehall beats blasting. Went in and ordered the vegan box for one before finding a seat in the sun. Great to try a bit of everything on one plate. My favourites were the casava chips and the tomato stew, which was a bit salty but exploding with flavour making it a perfect companion to the rice and beans.

Cameroonian more like vegoon-ian - Edit
First time eating West African food and I really enjoyed it. We shared the vegan platter for 2. Rich, oily flavours. Plantain was a surprise hit. My only complaint is that it didn’t feel like there was enough, but that was fixed with some more plantain.
