Delicious Chinese vegan restaurant inside a temple

A tasty gem! Waterdrop Teahouse is a small full-service restaurant located inside Chung Mei Buddhist Temple near Houston Texas. This is a branch of the Taiwanese Buddhist association Fo Guang Shan.

You cannot see the restaurant itself from the road - drive into the complex and enter through the main entrance of the temple. The restaurant is spotless, with floor to ceiling windows and a very calming environment.

And the food. Wow! It's one of the best Chinese vegetarian places around Houston (which is partly because there aren't that many...) but yes, it's yummy. The menu is largely healthy Taiwanese classics like noodles (available in soup or dry form, and spicy or nonspicy) with vegetables and soy protein or tofu. Appetizer samplers include Taiwanese starters like lotus root, veggie fish (all vegan of course), edamame, and dumplings. There's a "pocket sandwich" which is filled with corn and probably more for kids, not sure if that's authentic Taiwanese or added in case of picky children. There are also various rice dishes, and even a dish that seemed more Korean style, a tofu soup with mushrooms. To top it off, some very good teas, including herbal and fruit varieties, are offered.

Prices are very reasonable. They do take credit card. No alcohol, and no outside food is allowed. There is an outdoor dining area too.

Note: They may be closed during Buddhist holidays or during the (rare) meditation retreats.
