Best Meal in Japan - Edit
We went there for dinner. We both had the fried tofu. It was the most extraordinary meal we've had in Japan, and one of the most memorable of our lives. The two people we interacted with were just unbelievably kind, earnest, and intentional. We didn't want to leave!

Medioker food - Edit
When you are on this island, you are of course happy that there are vegan options but this was nothing special. They had a vegan menu with a number of dishes so that's nice, but after reading the descriptions below I was quite disappointed when I got there. I ate the deep fried tofu set, the tofu was great, but I don't think they'd succeeded with the miso soup. The wibe was, however, perhaps not so strange, very touristy.

Superb service and food - Edit
Cozy and classy washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine) restaurant at a very accessible price and located close to the ferry dock. I was attracted by a sign in front advertising their vegan offerings including sushi and ended up choosing a tempura and rice bowl. The meal was a HUGE serving of delicious mixed vegetable tempura on great rice with a richly flavored sauce, served with a side of pickled veggies and a sweet pickled kombu I’ve only seen here. I really can’t stress enough how much I liked the tempura. The server was kind and inviting, and spoke enough English to provide an interesting conversation. Seating is western style tables and chairs, and plating included cute ceramic cat chopstick rests. Great food and good vibes all around, I can’t recommend this place highly enough, 10/10

They have a vegan menu! - Edit
A lovely spot run by a couple of sweet old Japanese ladies, you can ask for the vegan menu as soon as you sit as it's normally not given with the regular menu.
Read moreWe had a great vegetable tempura with miso soup and rice, and we tried the rolls with umeboshi, definitely not my cup of tea, too sour, I should have had the ones with cucumber.
Service was delightful and food was great! Recommended if you're in Miyajima as it's right in front of the ferry station.
Pros: Vegan menu, Delicious tempura, Lovely staff
Cons: Umeboshi rolls too sour (but it's my opinion)

Very good vegan tempura, friendly staff - Edit
The food was amazing (and vegan!). You need to specifically ask for the vegan menu. The tempurs was extremly good, especially the sauce. Bonus point for local ingredients (from farms the owners know). The waiter/owner is also really kind.

Yummy vegan food on Miyajima - Edit
Arrived at 10 to 2 (last orders at 2) and the friendly staff happily served us and we didn't feel rushed to leave. Food was tasty and price was cheap. We had the tempura rice set and cucumber sushi rolls, both quite tasty. Not the best things we ate in Japan but for the price and location it was worth visiting

Vegan menu - Edit
Ask for the vegan menu when you get there, and the staff are happy to provide it. There is a good selection of vegan options on the menu.
Read moreThe staff are so friendly! They gave me a cup of lovely Japanese tea for free with my food which was really sweet.
I had the vegetable tempura set which was incredible. A huge variety of vegetables are included, in addition to riec, miso soup and pickles. The portion size is great value for money!
The only con is, since this is not a vegan restuarant, it does serve animal products. There's a big fish tank in the restaurant with some rather sad looking (possibly dead?) fish which was sad to see, hence the 3 stars rating instead of 4 stars.
Pros: Good vegan choice, Authentic traditional Japanese experience, Friendly staff
Cons: Sad fish tank in the restaurant :(

Great place for vegan lunch and stays - Edit
Went here for lunch
Read moreYamaichi Bekkan has been serving vegan meals for longer than any other restaurant in Miyajima. They pride themselves on everyone being able to eat together at the same table, whether your group includes vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free, or Muslim diners (sometimes all of the above!)
The vegan tempura was delicious and I hope to return for their vegan sushi lunch (seasonal availability).
Accommodating such a range of dietary preferences means it is a popular place, so reservations are recommended. Alternatively, as it is opposite the ferry port, pop in when you arrive and try to secure a spot for later in the day.
Judging from the lunches, an overnight stay with a vegan kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast should be a real treat!

Delightful stay - Edit
We had dinner and breakfast included. Splurged a little extra for the full ryokan experience. We were very happy we did. Food was great, seven course served amazingly fast. Staff remembered our names and are very friendly. The chef came by our table and explained the dishes in detail, adding context to ingredients origins.
Read moreIn the morning during breakfast we had an opportunity to talk with Teppei the chef again and he even recommended Saido to us, according to him (and now us) the pioneer of vegan food in Japan. I've felt very taken care of in this lovely place.

Cons: Can't give 5 stars

so glad we stopped here! we came for lunch after taking the ferry over from hiroshima; this ryokan and restaurant are a straight shot from the ferry terminal exit.
Read moreit was a treat to find vegan-friendly agedashi tofu; I got the lunch set and polished off everything, which enough to carry me through the mt misen hike but not so much I felt stuffed. the family that runs it is truly lovely and can provide a separate veg/vegan menu for you if you ask. a little pricier since it’s part of the ryokan but well worth it!

Don't count on this for dinner. When we realised it was only open for staying customers / reservations (?), there was nowhere else to go for dinner. Couldn't find the opening times anywhere.

Lovely experience - Edit
I was in this ryokan for dinner, night and breakfast, and it was an unforgettable experience. The dinner was a sequence of seven portions of gourmet and genuine Japanese food, including vegan sushi, miso soup, cooked and fresh vegatables, fruits dessert. Breakfast consists of various little portions of vegetables and spices to eat with rice, a delicious muschroom soup, tofu, and fresh fruits with yogurt. Staff was very kind.

Ho mangiato in questo ryokan caratteristico. Titolare davvero gentile, parla inglese. Alcuni piatti vegani nel menù. Ho preso il set tempura di verdure che mi è stato servito con del riso e del brodo vegetale. Ottimo servizio dall’inizio alla fine.

Opening times may be wrong. Turned up 7pm one night and 6:30pm the second night to be turned away saying they we’re closed - people sat in there. Was also shut at 3pm so no idea what the hours are. This on HappyCow is the only option available in the evening so if you are staying on Miyajima make sure you bring provisions
