Very yummy! Good service!

I can’t confirm the bad review.
My experience here was very good! Most of the menu is vegan. The miso soup contains fish stock.
The curry was excellent and the owner was very accommodating. When I was asking about the taste of Jerusalem artichoke tea, she brought me some granulate to taste.
They sell organic veggies and other natural products at the shop too.

The bad review is not about food quality. I used to go there regularly and until the conversation that I mentioned in the review happened, the lady had always been nice to me. It was pretty upsetting. I’m glad you had a good experience though. I think that after what happened with me, she will be more careful if the topic of veganism comes out in the future.

No respect for veganism

I gave this place a good review, but the last time I went there I had a pretty bad experience. I was reading a vegan guide in which their restaurant was mentioned and when I showed it to the owner (an elder lady), she said she doesn’t give a crap about veganism. I ignored that comment and laughed it off, but when she came back to bring us food she asked me if I really don’t eat meat (“really? Like, never ever?”) and joked about secretly putting some meat in my next meal. I didn’t laughed that off.
I understand veganism is not well understood in Japan, especially by the elderly, but that’s not the kind of comment I expect at a restaurant with so many vegan options.
The food is still great, so if you don’t speak Japanese/don’t mention veganism to the old lady, you can enjoy it.

Definitely worth a visit

[Restaurant Review: Yaoya] English below 👇

We’ve discovered another hidden gem of a restaurant we’re excited to share with you. It’s Yaoya (written 八〇八 ), about two minutes from Zengyo station in Fujisawa.

Yaoya is a charming family-run Japanese restaurant that, true to its name, is also an organic vegetable shop. Inside you’ll find a few shelves selling vegan-friendly food and personal care items, and a few tables to sit down at.

The friendly staff assured us that most of the menu items are vegan already, but it would probably be best to say that you’re vegan so they can guide you through the menu.

We tried the tendon (tempura served over rice.) As soon as we ordered, the staff went outside to the vegetable shop area and took the veggies for our meals! The tendon came in a very generous portion, with salad, miso soup, and a wide variety of veggies. Every bite was delicious. Even the goya was somewhat edible (I am not a fan of goya).

For dessert we tried the mizu yokan, a sort of jelly made from red bean paste. It was a tasty end to a fantastic meal.

I can’t recommend Yaoya highly enough. Dining there feels like having a meal at your Japanese grandma’s house, in the best possible way. There’s not a lot going on in Zengyo, but I’d say it’s worth the trip out there to dine at this very special place.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Fresh, organic veggies are the star of the show , Friendly, family-run business

Cons: Small and a little shabby-looking
