Perfect for breakfast - Edit
A short walk from Kanazawa station you find this charming Café.
Read moreThey offer a variety of sweet and savory food as well as Coffees and other drinks.
Their vegetarian dishes can be made vegan upon request.
The taste and presentation of my order was on point.
I also really liked the interior of the place, with a wooden ceiling and vintage Italian style bar.

Tasty vegan greek sandwich - Edit
The vegan greek sandwich was very enjoyable and the soy chai latte was delicious. The menu does not mark vegan options but you can ask the staff what can be modified to be vegan. The service was very “american”.

Cozy and Comfortable - Edit
As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a very knowledgeable native English speaker who confidently showed us which vegetarian dishes could be made vegan. We had a chai tea latte and matcha latte with soy milk, a cup of veggie chili, a mushroom sandwich without feta cheese or yogurt sauce, and a Greek chickpea wrap without feta cheese. Nothing on the menu was labeled vegan as-is, but there were the above labeled vegetarian options which were easily modified. The atmosphere of the cafe was also very cozy and comfortable.

Ask about vegan options - Edit
The staff were friendly and spoke English. The owner was very keen to take us through all the vegan options once we had made him aware we were vegan. There weren't many explicitly vegan options but once we asked, it was explained to us that there was the option of making many of the dishes vegan. I had hummus with bread, salad and soup. The hummus and bread was delicious - some of the best hummus I've had. The salad usually comes with cheese but that was taken out for me and the the soup is usually made with dairy milk but was swapped out for soya milk. I also had a coffee with soya milk which was great!

Cons: Would be nice to see a couple more vegan options

Very limited vegan options.. if any. - Edit
We went to this place because it was recommended by a friend who lives in Kanazawa.
Read moreI asked what was vegan and the lady at the till showed me two items on the menu. When I read the menu with more attention it appeared that one of them contained cheese. So I ordered the hummus plate.
It arrived with a tomato soup which on first look looked like it contained dairy. I gave it to my friend who confirmed. Started chomping on the salad and realized there were small white nuggets of cheese sprinkled on top. I picked them off. Then I ate the bread provided with the hummus which was very good but the texture made me think that it was probably not vegan either.
I honestly wouldn't have gone had I known.
Coffee was excellent. But overall avoid if you are vegan.
Pros: Good coffee, English spoken
Cons: Nothing is vegan (imho) , Cash only

Thank you for visiting Curio, and we hope that you enjoyed your trip to Kanazawa!
Read morePlease allow me to respond to your review of our cafe.
Curio is not primarily a vegetarian restaurant, nor have we ever advertised ourselves as such. In fact I estimate that roughly one in every 500 of the people visiting our cafe have a dietary restriction that would require them to seek out such a place. Nontheless we certainly empathize with the difficulties faced by our Vegetarian/Vegan/gluten and lactose intolerant friends traveling in japan.
For this reason we have included the option to make the majority of our menu vegetarian/vegan friendly.
The big keyword here is OPTION. If you go to the description of our cafe at top of this page, it clearly says “Serves meat, vegan OPTIONS available”.....For example, All of our coffee drinks are also offered with the OPTION of soy milk over dairy.
All of our food is made in house, and the Quinoa, Hummus, Chili, salad, granola and breads are prepared 100%vegan, but with dairy products served either on the side or or sprinkled on top, unless of course you specify the vegan OPTION.
Had you specified when you ordered with your server that you needed the meal to be prepared vegan, then we would have gladly used soy milk in the soup rather than dairy and left the feta cheese off of your salad. I will never quite understand why some people refuse to ask a restaurant to remedy something in a meal (which we would quite happily do), and instead choose to suffer through the experience in silence, and then leave a terrible review for the restaurant. It’s a lose/lose for everyone involved.
We are truly sorry to hear that the miscommunication caused you to have a less than perfect experience at our cafe, and we sincerely hope that you enjoy the rest of your travels in Japan

Had a lovely lunch here. - Edit
We had the chili plate, and the hummus plate. Very nice. Hummus and mushroom soup were good. Chili was good but think there might have been cheese in it. Be sure to specify that you need everything vegan. There was a nice man there who spoke perfect English to us, and the staff all had pretty good English too. It’s on a great shopping street.

Cons: Double check the “vegan-ness” of the chili.

Pluses and minuses, bread may not be vegan. - Edit
The big plus here for breakfast is that soy milk is available. I had granola and did not inquire about the sweetener in it. I tried to urge the owner to have some vegan pastries available. He stated that they tried to make them in the past, but they weren’t as good as those made with butter and eggs, and when most people learned that they were vegan, they didn’t want to try them, assuming that they would be lousy. I pointed out that many restaurants put a little V next to the things that are vegan, and those people who are not vegan don’t pay much attention to it, but those who are will know that they can eat it. However, he very nicely made it clear that he is not interested in ever making any vegan pastries again. That I asked him if his bread was vegan. He said something like this, “ I don’t know why it wouldn’t be, yes, yes, it’s vegan I know it’s vegan.” As we all recognize, this is the way people talk when they want to convince us to order something and they really don’t know what is in it. So there is no way of knowing whether the bread there is vegan or not, even though he will assure you that it is.

Nontheless we certainly empathize with the difficulties faced by Vegetarian/Vegan/gluten and lactose intolerant individuals traveling in japan.
For this reason we have included menu items that fulfill the dietary requirements of these customers, (such as our Quinoa Salad Plate, Hummus Plate, and Yuko’s Kick Ass Vegen Chili) and they have proven to be equally popular with our non-vege guests as well.
I am disappointed by your assertion that I was somehow dishonest whether our bread was vegan. If I seemed unsure, it was simply because we serve 3 different kinds of bread here, and I searching my memory bank to makes certain that it was indeed vegan friendly. and I apologise if it appeared that I was fabricating my answer.
I have double checked with my baker, and he has assured me that both our sandwich rolls and Baguette are vegan friendly.
Thanks again for visiting Curio!

Very nice ! - Edit
This place is very close to the station and the main attractions of Kanazawa. It has a western feel and is very nicely decorated. I had the hummus set which came with a delicious salad and soup. Prices were very reasonable and in line with Japan prices. Staff were fully English speaking which helps for those who don’t know Japanese. Very nicely decorated and the service was great.

Better than expected - Edit
Western feel so started doubting whether we should go elsewhere for Japanese. Luckily we gave it the benefit of the doubt and ordered hummus bread dips which came with soup and salad and it was enriched with flavours. Granola was standard not sure how the other reviews stated it otherwise. Checked with staff if it had honey but they use maple syrup for those interested in ordering this.

Great - Edit
The food was really simple but done incredibly well and very flavourful. They were happy to make their chilli and sandwiches vegan by simply removing the cheese. Staff speaks excellent English and recommended some good bars in the area. Ask for the hot sauce if you like your chilli with more kick.

Pros: great atmosphere; nice mix of cultures; fun interi
