Vegan okonomiyaki! - Edit
We may be the luckiest people alive as we rolled up to this place on a recommendation and waited 20 mins to eat. I loved the okonomiyaki, my only light criticism is that is has a LOT of sweet sauce on it. Super good and may return on this trip.

Amazingly good - Edit
I loved it even though we had to wait more than an hour! We knew that reservation was necessary but decided to give it a try anyway and were not disappointed. They have a good variety of vegan options to order from, and everything tasted delicious. The portions were also big! I'm looking forward to going again.

if you have to wait long, don’t - Edit
i was kind of looking forward to this place but glad i came almost when they opened. i was in line and was one of the first people seated, but a few ordered before me. i waited quite a while to get my food (there are signs saying vegan one takes longer but idk why).
Read moreas i saw from the pics of menus past, the price has basically doubled since a year or two ago. it also seems like the vegan menu is smaller than it was before. as i came alone i was only able to get one dish because i didnt want to spend nearly 40 dollars for 2 dishes. i got a side salad that i was appalled cost 500 yen when it arrived at the table. a handful of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and some fried garlic. wasn’t worth it.
while tasty, the okonomiyaki was also not worth the price. it would not be something i would go back for, nor would i invite friends to go with me. i wanted to try the yakisoba as well but like i said, i had to pick one.
if you have to wait a long time, i would recommend trying some other option in the area as you may be disappointed.

Nessuna delle portate ci è piaciuta, e la lunga attesa non ne vale la pena, comunque il personale è molto gentile ed il posto in cui si trova è bellissimo

COME EARLY!
Read moreI had huge expectations for this place but after 1.5-2 hrs of queuing in the freezing cold night and an avarage meal i'm sad to say it didn't live up to it. Yes i appreciate they have a traditional japanese meal veganized, vegan sauces and nice setting etc.
Towards the end of the night it feeled like we were rushed.
SO if you come here make sure you come early so you don't have to wait that much.

Great experience - Edit
I was traveling in Japan with a meat eater, so finding places to eat that we could both enjoy was a little challenging and Gion Tanto was a total standout experience for me - I got to try okonomiyaki without worrying that there was meat/fish in it, she got to try other teppanyaki dishes, and the restaurant is in a beautiful part of Gion overlooking the river. I get that people hate waiting in a queue but we went as they were opening and didn't have to wait long, and to be able to really enjoy an affordable, delicious meal was totally worth it. Highly recommend if you are traveling in mixed company!
Read moreAlso being more of a reader than writer of reviews on here, I wondered why so many people had glowing reviews but only gave 4 stars and just realized that Happy Cow reserves 5 starts for fully veg/vegan restaurants, so just an fyi out there for anyone else wondering, I'd definitely give this 5 if possible for catering to us both and serving a great meal & great experience.

Bestes veganes okonomiyaki - Edit

Love love love. Such a rare treat. - Edit
I have always been a big fan of okonomiyaki from my non-vega days but it’s one of those things that really isn’t easy to find these days. Gion Tanto have done the dish proud. Super tasty and with a few things to choose from on the menu. We went for a mixture and shared, and that was definitely the way to go. Condiments all available as vegan too. Yummmm.

Nice Restaurant in Kyoto serving vegan options - Edit
We had dinner at Gion Tanto after our day in Kyoto. While they serve meat, they do have an entire vegan menu. The vegan okonomiyaki was great. There’s lots of options for toppings. They also provide vegan mayonnaise and sauces. A very nice restaurant for some traditional japanese cuisine and works out nicely when traveling with non-vegans as well!

Beautiful Vegan Okinomiyaki - Edit
This was a great find in Kyoto. A small restaurant hidden down a lane way. On arrival I stated I was vegan and they gave me a vegan menu. They had vegan mayonnaise and vegan sweet sauce. The vegan okinomiyaki was delicious and the experience was perfect. Highly recommend

Traditional Japanese experience - Edit
Come here to try vegan teppanyaki on tatami mats! The restaurant is located in a picturesque neighborhood and has a very cozy atmosphere inside. We had to wait 30 mins for two people on a weeknight but I think it’s worth it! I got vegan okonomiyaki, which was pretty good- like a giant veggie pancake with BBQ sauce.

Vegan Okonomiyaki - Edit
This place has vegan and nonvegan options. We tried the vegan Okonomiyaki, one version with udon and another without. We preferred the one without udon. Its was crispy, savory, and filling. And we got the best seats facing the Gion Tatsumi Bridge. Would highly recommend that you check it out. And we would advise to give yourself enough time because it fills up very quickly and has limited space.

The reviews that mentioned the food not being worth it were the ones I wish I listened to. I appreciate that they had vegan options and dedicated sauces, but simply put the food was not good nor was it worth waiting for. The noodles might be good though, they looked good!

Bring time - Edit
The food was good (but not overwhelmingly good) and the experience of sitting next to kitchen where the cooks prepare your oknomiyaki is cool. However, we had to wait in a queue for over an hour and to be honest, the food was not worth waiting outside for such a long time, even though it wasn't bad.

We waited approx 30 mins at 7:30pm on a weekend, but it was definitely worth it! Great okonomayaki, and possibly the best yakisoba I have ever had. The yuba salad is no longer on the vegan menu but we asked and they said it was still vegan, and was nice.

YAY!!! VEGAN OKONOMIYAKI! WOOOOOOO!!!
Read moreOk for real this place was awesome. It was the longest I’ve ever had to wait in line for food but dang so worth it! We waited about an hour and 40 minutes from 6 pm, so get there before it opens to secure your spot folks! Staff have an entirely vegan menu so just ask for it when you go into the waiting room (yes there’s a waiting room after you’ve lined up outside for ages)
The vegan noodles were to die for. The okonomiyaki was also pretty bangin’, and I really loved that they brought over vegan sweet sauce and vegan Mayo as they knew we were using the vegan menu.
A must visit on your trip to Kyoto! Leave plenty of time for that que though 😁
Pros: A whole vegan menu , Cheap drinks , THE NOODZ!!!
Cons: Very, very, VERY long que.

A great, traditional Japanese restaurant - Edit
Would give 5 stars if HappyCow allowed it! We loved our visit here! A full vegan menu, although you have to ask for it as it is separate from the regular menu and it’s not displayed. We waited over an hour for a table after arriving at around 7:45pm. Be aware that although it closes at 10pm, they closed the queue at around 8:45pm as there were many people waiting. They have a full range of vegan sauces too, and these are clearly labelled. Some tables are floor seating, others are dug out into the floor. Not wheelchair friendly unfortunately, or suitable for those who need chairs with back support.

Vegan possibilities - Edit
This busy traditional Japanese griddle restaurant (teppanyaki) has vegetarian options for its main dishes. Though other reviewers said they waited a long time to be seated, we two waited less than 10 minutes after we arrived at 12:30pm. We ordered green onion pancake (negiyaki) and vegetable pancake (okonomiyake) plus a small beer , which wasn’t so small but was the perfect accompaniment to the two main dishes. There is an English menu.
