Interesting vegan jelly

This Korean dessert based on red bean is very tasty and interesting! It's a bit fancy and thus pricey but the flavours are cool and they all tasted very good! Oh, and the packaging is really pretty!

Wow!

I’ve always wondered what this stuff was..I see it around Seoul often and kinda thought it was soap 😆
I’m so glad someone added it to happy cow or I might have never tried it! It’s definitely different in a good way and I can’t wait to try more flavors! I had a whole box filled but then learned they have to be refrigerated and I shouldn’t bring them on my trip, so I just grabbed a few for myself. I think I prefer the ones with nuts but I still have a lot more to try!

just good jelly bars

If you dont like jelly bars then dont bother but if you are not sure or def like them then this is great place to go.

I was hoping the whole bean would have more beans but there were just a few. The flavors were ok and they seemed focused on quality ingredients.

Boxes are nice.

Pros: Lots to choose from

Cons: Only last a few hours in summer heat!

Fancy Korean jelly bars

Geumokdang is a premium brand for fresh, hand-made Yanggaeng 양갱, a type of jelly with bean paste. They sell jelly bars with a variety of flavors, e.g. green tea, fruits or nuts. Except for the flavor "milk tea", which contains dairy, all are currently plant-based.

Yanggaeng is normally vegan by default, since the gelling agent is agar agar (from seaweed). Another key ingredient are beans (usually red beans 팥, aka azuki beans), which make the texture thick and kinda floury. Note that Yanggaeng is very different from Western types of jelly!

For those who like Yanggaeng, these ones are a special treat. Prices are higher than regular Yanggaeng, but they use only natural ingredients, e.g. unrefined brown and black sugar. Since it doesn’t contain preservatices, shelf life is shorter and they need to be cooled in the refrigerator.

At this location, they sell for take-out only, and you can purchase individual bars that you select yourself, or get pre-made gift boxes. Note that the extra gift wrapping (available at a surcharge) may be made of silk, which is traditionally a luxury material in Korea.
