Lokal fail. - Edit
We saw their booth at the Old Beach Farmers Market and were really excited about the vegan bread scone and cookies.
Read moreBread was salty and it's consistency was not bread (all holes and overdone). Scone was inedible. Balls of rosemary and salt studded throughout (it seems that it just wasn't mixed properly...)
The Cookies (chocolate chip and Oatmeal Coconut) were decent.
Lots of potential but poor execution resulting in a big disappointment.
Pros: Plant based!, Decent cookies
Cons: Bread wasn't bread, Scone was inedible., Pricey for items we ended up throwing out
Lokal
Well SharpVegan, we are not your style of bread. I'm sorry you had such a poor experience. And there are customers who do not enjoy European-style bread. That is why we offer cookies and other sweet items.
Read moreWe sell out most days we are at the farmers market and have a large number of returning customers. Our bread is different. We focus on it being healthful and delicious. This means we use fresh, organic flour, do not use any dough conditioner, and make everything by hand. We know we will not be for everyone, but if you are plant-based or vegan and want bread with a lower glycemic index and less gluten, LOKAL is your bakery.

It’s good! - Edit
Updating an earlier review...this place has really grown on me. Some of the food is pretty mildly flavored, but I had the tofu scramble this morning, and it was really delicious! Happy to have this option in Williamsburg. One of my favorite spots now.

Hey Jahubbard, I appreciate your honest feedback here, and I’m sorry we didn’t quite make the mark on our bread. You see, our bread is a housemade vegan sourdough bread, so the “floral flavor” you’ve mentioned may be due to the fermentation process it goes through to break down into a more easily digestible bread, lowering the gluten content.
Read moreAs for the price, please be mindful that, as of the time of this review, sale taxes are included in the price. Also, we are located in downtown Williamsburg, which is known for its high rent. That is because most of our customers are tourists and students, so it's important for us to be near CW and W&M. On top of that, we do our best to provide local and organic ingredients and make everything ourselves, so we can ensure we can cater to people with different dietary requirements, while also supporting our community. Nevertheless, we will be rolling out some updates on our menu fairly soon, so I encourage you to come back and check us out again soon to see what’s new!

Delicious sandwiches - Edit
We ordered the vegan burger and jackfruit bbq sandwiches and they were super delicious. Prepared with high quality homemade ingredients, my favorite part was the homemade sourdough focaccia. Would definitely go back when I’m in the area! The owner was super nice and chatted with us about veganism. 100% recommended 👌🏼

Yummy drinks - Edit
Stopped by for the vegan gelato. They no longer serve it, but we are glad we went. The man at the counter was very helpful and cared a lot about making it a good experience. We got the hot chocolate and chai tea. The hot chocolate was made from ground up raw cacao and served with optional coconut whipped cream, so good!

Really good. What I liked was the attitude to food, the fun in ordering and the quality of the food.

Vegan need not mean tasteless in 2019 - Edit
I had decided not not go after reading the reviews but I found myself right next to it and decided to check it out. Turns out it identifies as vegan with non-vegan options (purists, please don’t start with me, I am vegan AF). That is good, plenty of options. I had the sandwich with the arepas instead of bread; at which point I was asked why I wanted to sub the bread did I have a gluten allergy (wtf?). I also added the chickpea tofu. The sandwich was bland, the greens in the sandwich seem to have been cooked and overdone at that. There was zero flavour, which seems consistent with other reviewers. I have not had vegan food this bland and poorly presented. The person working the order counter seemed to be the owner and came across as one of those people who won’t be told, possibly that’s why the food doesn’t seem to have improved. The basement seating area is a nice space with art on the walls, some for sale.

Can’t rate the food because we weren’t able to go. Just wanted to let people know the hours in happy cow are wrong.

Excellent time - Edit
Only four stars allowed because the restaurant serves meat, but I can not recommend this place enough. Went with my family and the portions were very satisfying and intentionally nutrient dense (yes a bit on the smaller side. The owner took the time to talk with us and personally address my mom’s gluten allergy. Some people on this app don’t like this restaurant, so I guess it could be considered niche, but again, very positive experience.

Overpriced - Edit
Too expensive for what you get. Really annoys me that the owner will say to your face that it’s a vegetarian restaurant, when there is meat available and on the menu. Really wish it was better priced (or bigger portions for the current price) and no meat on the menu.

Mmmmmm - Edit
Focaccia is delicious, a lil heat to the jackfruit bbq topping is simply amazing. Took it home and tweaked one just for my own curiosity with a lil sweatner. Also Had the body boost smoothly that was enjoyable but yes once I got it home I added a lil cinnamon and agave nectar.

Cons: 🤔 put the previous smoothie order, that's extra in sample cups.

Bland Expensive Food - Edit
I have been vegan for about two years now, and I just moved to Williamsburg. I went here for lunch and got “the vegan” sandwich and ginger kombucha. It was ridiculously small, and so bland. There was no seasoning on the sandwich, and the kale was very bitter. If someone who wasn’t vegan tried this food they would never eat vegan again. It was just absolutely terrible!! Vegan food should taste good!! The kombucha tasted like pure vinegar and was undrinkable. Will not be going back here, and I strongly urge my fellow vegans to avoid this place. It was a waste of money for what was served. Very upset.

Delicious but Pricey - Edit
This is a great place for fresh local eats! I had the vegan sandwich (their avocado is the BEST in the game) and some cocnut water. The sandwiches are pretty small for their price, although they quite yummy! The smoothies are pricey also, but very fresh.

subpar food, nice space - Edit
Lokal is near my school so I really wanted it to have great vegan food. Sadly instead it has mediocre mostly-vegetarian food. The smoothies are pretty good, but too lumpy, and I dislike their homemade almond milk.

We had to throw out our smoothie. It tasted terrible. The service was poor. They messed up the order customer ahead of us and had to remake it. I would never come here again.

It was okay, not great - Edit
The atmosphere is very coffee-house like (not a bad thing). I'm happy they have vegetarian and vegan options available. I ordered the vegan sandwich and kombucha. We asked about side items for the sandwich and the gentleman up front, who was very friendly, said that their philosophy is that "the portions are large enough to fill you, that you wouldn't need side items." The sandwich tasted good... but I needed side items. Very small portions for a young male. The kombucha tasted like a pure cup of apple cider vinegar... and I drink apple cider vinegar with water regularly. Not good.

Very good! - Edit
This little shop is a nice, short walk from colonial Williamsburg. Staff is super friendly, their food is all homemade and local-based (and delicious!), their kombucha is good in smoothies, and they gave us vegan muffins for free! I recommend this place 10/10 and would give it 5 stars if HappyCow allowed it

Vegan Visitors - Edit
We visited Lokal on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. The staff was helpful and guided me through my entire order patiently and pleasantly. I ordered the Island Green which was modified to suit my nut allergy, and the vegan sandwich. It took a while to get my small order but the wait was worth it. I wouldnt change a thing about the order or experience!

Great Lunch-Friendly Owner - Edit
We were visiting Williamsburg for a day trip & were really pleased to find this place via Happy Cow because past visits have shown that low-fat, vegan food can be hard to come by in town.
Read moreMy husband & I each had the vegan sandwich. We ordered Soup as well, but based on the owners recommendation, we shared the soup so we'd have room for dessert. We ended up with a ton of food, & it was all delicious! For dessert, we shared a coffee sorbet that was out if this world!
This small cafe has a tiny food menu along with lots if smoothies, sorbets, & gelatos. There are a few breakfast options, some muffins, a few sandwiches (1 vegan), a daily soup, & a salad that can be ordered with pretty much any ingredients.
The owner is friendly & is passionate about healthy food. Although he orders Muffins from a vegan bakery, it appears that virtually everything else is prepared in-house with carefully-sourced, healthy ingredients.

A welcome spot on the main drag - Edit
Lokal is a wonderful place for lunch or smoothies in an area with very few choices for vegans and vegetarians. They have a limited daily menu, but it always includes a vegetarian option and they were very accommodating to make anything vegan. Everything is local or house-made, including the delicious bread. The kombucha they make is a must try!
