Cheap, crowded, but good!

You can actually leave here with a week’s worth of groceries without breaking the bank. It’s crowded and a little overwhelming but the stuff is dirt cheap. They also have some good produce that is hard to find elsewhere which I like. Try to go during the week and at off hours to make it more manageable.

Cheap but super sketch

Segal is known to be the cheapest and sketchiest grocery in Montreal. But I am happy that it exists because they have a ton of vegan friendly items, mock meat, plant based cheese, produce, frozen meal, nut butter… some bulk items, pastas and planted based milks, be aware that those last 3 items are near the Portuguese dried fish in the back and I am always hesitant to take them here because I am afraid they will catch the super strong fish smell and taste. Tips: check the dates on the products they tend to sell some near expired products and don’t even think about going on a Saturday, the place is super crowded.

Super

Super épicerie très peu cher avec plein de choix de variétés de produits internationaux
Beaucoup de choix de similis vegan à des prix bas (pâté, steacks, saucisses, bacon etc.)

Convenient

The place is gross, but the prices are unbeatable. They carry a ton of vegan products and it's so cheap!

They don't have bags, so bring your own. It can get pretty crowded on Saturdays, but today wasn't that bad, so it depends.

Cheapest Grocery in Town

I go to Segals weekly. There fresh produce section has decent options and is cheap. You’ll also find plenty of vegan meats, cheeses, meals, sauces etc all at great prices. The sell Unisoya firm tofu for 1.49$/ pack. They often have carriages of 1$ items at the front of the store. It’s a small store and can get very crowded but remember it’s crowded for everybody. At the back of the store they have cod fish in a container so the back of the store smells really bad.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Very cheap, Friendly staff

Cons: Very crowded

Excellent for vegans

A popular place! Choose your time - it’s very crowded on a Saturday afternoon. When I returned before noon on a weekday, it was much easier to move around. There is lots of fresh produce, including some grab bags for just one dollar. Best things are the many vegan products and the very good prices. There's an olive bar and big, bulk bins of beans back near the pasta.
This would be a regular grocery source for me, if I lived closer.
Very non-descript door and storefront, so it’s easy to walk by without noticing it.

My go-to

They have so many (if not all) vegan products available, at an incredible price!
It’s not always constant for every products.

You find everything and for cheap !

They have so many options, and at the cheapest price you can get in town. BUT you have to know that the staff is rude, and the place looks very scary ahahah You have to go knowing that the price you are getting is worth spending a quite uncomfortable moment there.

Pros: unbeatable prices !, So many options

Cons: rude staff, very rustic space

Très pratique

L'endroit n'est pas très convivial, on a pas envie d'y passer des heures, mais une fois par mois, je fais le plein de produits secs, laits végétaux, farines, huiles... et je me fais livrer à la maison !

Pros: Delivery

Lots of good stuff

This is a fantastic place to stock up on tons of vegan and organic staples, some that you can actually only find there. The prices are really good...things like kombucha are much cheaper than in other markets. They also have bulk beans, and quinoa by the kilo. Sometimes it can be quite the state of madness in there, but I think that's also part of it's charm, just plug your nose when you go past the stacks of dried fish in the back.

Pros: Awesome prices, Great selection

Cons: Fish smell in the back, Can get pretty crowded

Hard to leave with overflowing bags

Segal's is hard to find as there is no bright sign and it doesn't look appealing in the least from outside, but I don't think one can find better prices overall anywhere in Montreal. Tofu is cheaper, vegan cheeses are cheaper and there are plenty of those (this is where I go when I want to make sure I find Tofutti cream cheese), and there are often products on sale for a bargain. If I lived in the area, that would be my go-to spot.

Pros: Unbeatable prices, Great variety

Cons: Do not go there when in a rush
