Perfect - Edit
Ordered takeaway which was delivered to our hotel last night. Oh. My. Goodness. Gracious. Meeeeee! It was out of this world good. The gluten free options were amazing! I had the funk fish supper and my partner had the faggis supper both of which were deee-lish! The tofish had the perfect texture, seasoning and everything - very rare in the world of eating out as a vegan gluten free-er. But the absolute star of the show was the mushy peas; holy crapamoly they were better than any mushy peas I've ever had. And the tartare sauce was perfect too. Oh snd the chips, of course. Cannot recommend this place enough. We WILL be back next time in Edinburgh and if they ever decide to open a joint in Glasgow. We'll be first in the queue!

Amazing! 10/10 would recommend - Edit
We arrived just after they opened and ordered straight away - the guy behind the bar was a bit grumpy but the food staff were incredibly friendly, the bar and kitchen are ran separately. Food took ages to come out and when it came the chef (and owner) came out really apologetic and explained their head chef had walked out the previous evening and it had been absolute chaos, he was so kind and it was clear he was very stressed but kept it together and still delivered insane food!
Read moreThe food itself was so worth the wait and the portions were huge!! We had a pizza crunch supper and a battered sausage supper which were both incredible. My partner isn’t vegan and even he loved it!
The pub itself is quirky, fun and a little bit rough round the edges with students deals on drinks and various games to play.
All in all I would recommend a visit if you’re in Edinburgh and fancy a proper good chippy tea

Not worth it AT ALL. - Edit
We came to Happy Fish excited for Scotland’s first (only??) vegan chippy! The fish is made out of smoked flavor fried/battered tofu and we also had the faux mozzarella sticks. The mozzarella sticks were made with store bought cheese. Like Violife. It was honestly pretty gross. The fried part - good. Cheese - bad. It would be better if they made the cheese themselves.
Read moreNow… the worst part was the environment. What a disgusting musty sticky loud college bar! Graffiti everywhere. Sticky tables. Neon lights. Horrible loud music. So loud we wore earplugs. We ordered, ate as fast as we could and booked it out of there. We could NOT recommend Not coming enough. The fish and chips just aren’t good enough. Like very innovative and awesome to see a vegan option, but seriously not worth how gross this place is. It looks like a health violation.

Make their own vegan mozzarella cheese, seriously? The majority of this review is based on the Dog House establishment and not The Happy Fish. You're welcome to your opinions, but personally I find this 2/5 massively unfair and quite frankly pretentious

Insanely delicious - Edit
Really quirky place which was nice. But the food really was borderline phenomenal. Huge portions too (I'm a fatty and couldn't finish or had room for desert). Tastiest vegan fish alternative I have ever had. The cauliflower fritters were absolutely beautiful too.
Read moreOnly point I'd make is you pay first and are asked about a tip first before any service or food which I'd never tip before.

Really good vegan fish - Edit
The bar is really fun. We really liked how it was decorated. You have to order the food on whatsapp. It worked really well. We only had to wait a moment, and our food arrived. The fish was amazing!

Came here in the aftermath of storm Éowyn. Very nice chippy tea. Interesting decor inside! Pay separately for food and drinks. Nice to support a vegan chippy. Business is responsive on WhatsApp too.

Best fish supper ever! - Edit
I’m a gluten free vegan, so eating out is a challenge. Great fish and chips has been a treat missing for a long time, so to be able to go to The Dog House (brilliant pub) and get the best crispy battered fish, chunky chips and mushy peas, with homemade tartare sauce is incredible 😁 Real care was taken over my gluten free food too. All the stars 🌟 #Veganuary

For those missing Fish Suppers - Edit
We attended as part of a Vegan meet-up event.
Read moreElliot has worked some magic & made one of the best Vegan Fish & chips I've had in a long time. There's loads to choose from - I had the Smoked Funk-fish supper & it was amazing. The portion sizes are decent & really flavoursome.
If fish-style things aren't you jam, the chips are reminiscent of chip-shop style chips & are really tasty. There's also a chip butty, battered sausage, & other Fish & chip shop menu items too (including deep fried pizza).
The venue got quite busy whilst we were there, so a little noisy, but a great pub with some very eclectic décor.
We were also able to sample the desserts which are a great addition to the meal. There's ice-cream & some deep fried favourites again.
I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the happy fish.
Pros: Loads of options , Amazing flavours , Good portion sizes
Cons: The venue can get noisy

A little bit fishy - Edit
Happy Fish was exactly the place I needed on a Monday night. I left feeling ready to stock up on fruit and veg for the rest of the week! Duncan did a fantastic job making sure we had everything we needed, and we opted for the faddock supper and the loaded fish fries.
Read moreThe food came out quickly and was served in generous portions. While actual plates would have been a nice touch, we made do with the cardboard trays. The dish was a taste of the sea without the cruelty, and the flavors carried a bit of Glasgow with them—which we all loved.
I could easily eat here often, but I’d be happy making it a treat every few weeks. Great food and service! If you’re in Edinburgh, give it a visit.

Best Chippy for Vegans around! - Edit
The dog house is a pretty wild setting but it is so interesting and full pf character who wouldn't love it? Here i have dined several times and each time has been so tasty, it has been so fun trying new things every time. All options are also very reasonably priced. The owner (elliot) is so bubbly and chatty, it is wholesome to see someone that feels so much passion for their job and values. Elliot really is the heart and soul of The Happy Fish at the dog house. Great selection of food to try, good portions and food always arrives promptly. I will be back no doubt very, very soon.

Proper fish and chips - Edit
We had heard the fish and chips here were amazing and tried to go one Saturday night but were sadly unsuccessful as it was too busy. Alas, we tried again on a Thursday night, and boy-oh-boy, it did not disappoint!! (Moral of the story — do book if it’s the weekend)
Read moreWe both got the Tofish Supper and wowzers, the ‘fish’ was spot on — delicious flaky texture, light batter, amazing taste. The chips were perfection (i got the chunky ones and they were crispy af but fluffy on the inside). But the absolute HERO for me was the mushy peas! I’ve never had peas that taste that good!! They were in a mixture of spices/seasoning with fresh mint leaves — i’ve not stopped thinking about them.
The person who runs Happy Fish was so lovely too! Came and chatted with us, it made the experience even better. Needless to say, we will DEFINITELY be going back!

Impressive menu and great food - Edit
It felt a bit strange at first, as I did not realise that the business is separate from the pub and that you need to order via WhatsApp. Then, a person comes to collect your payment, and your food follows in about 15 minutes.
Read moreI went conservative and had just the "faddock" as a supper with chunky chips and mushy peas, but the whole menu looked so yummy! They even do "mussels" or "calamari", things I've never had in a non-vegan version, let alone vegan one! Definitely want to visit again and try more.
Pros: Affordable, Great choice of food
Cons: Need to order via phone, Single use packaging
